Alan Tyroch, professor and chairman of the Department of Surgery at Texas Tech’s Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, was elected governor-at-large of the American College of Surgeons. He will represent ACS Fellows in Texas for a three-year term. Governors are the official, direct communications link between the fellows of the college and the members of the ACS Board of Regents.

Texas Oncology has opened a new cancer center in El Paso at 3270 Joe Battle, led by Maria Aloba, a specialist in medical oncology and hematology. The center offers chemotherapy infusions, lab services and routine physician visits. Aloba received her bachelor’s degree in Biology and doctorate from the University of the Philippines in Manila. She completed her internship, residency and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center.


Elizabeth Terrazas has been named president of Junior Achievement of the Desert Southwest. Most recently she was regional vice president of resource development for the American Lung Association. Terrazas has a bachelor’s degree from UTEP. She has nine years of experience in nonprofit management and fund development.

Sierra Providence Health Network has received 27 CIGNA quality designations. The CIGNA designations are based on the hospital’s effectiveness in treating the selected condition or performing the procedure. Sierra Medical Center earned quality designations in: angioplasty, CABG, caesarean section, colon surgery, adult craniotomy, disc surgery, laparoscopic gallbladder removal, heart failure, total hip replacement, total abdominal hysterectomy, total knee replacement, adult pneumonia, spinal fusion, stroke and vaginal delivery. Providence Memorial Hospital earned quality designations in: caesarean section, colon surgery, disc surgery, laparoscopic gallbladder removal, heart failure, total hip replacement, total abdominal hysterectomy, total knee replacement, adult pneumonia, transurethral prostatectomy, spinal fusion and vaginal delivery.

Engineering firm Professional Service Industries has promoted W. Michael Davis to the position of construction services department manager in its El Paso office. Most recently Davis was the special project manager for the company’s cross unit 3 special project in South Carolina. He has been with PSI since 1988.

The Texas Water Development Board has loaned $6.4 million to the City of El Paso and El Paso County under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund to finance wastewater system improvements. The city will use the funds to address the removal of non-point source pollutants gathered in rainfall run-off. Improvements at Featherlake II and Basin G involve the deepening of the basins to create a wetland to remove pollutants.

Marco Bencomo, senior vice president of the commercial insurance division of JDW Insurance, has been awarded the Business Leader Award. The award is presented to the individual who generates the most new business. Bencomo has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from UTEP. He has earned the professional designation of Certified Insurance Counselor.

The Better Business Bureau Foundation in El Paso received a $3,000 grant from the Texas Bar Foundation to support the foundation’s arbitration program. The grant will fund arbitration training.

The Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce graduated its 31st Leadership El Paso class. Graduates will be honored at a dinner Dec. 2 at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing. Jay Thomas, a UTEP alumnus, has donated eleven watercolor lithographs to the College of Engineering from the estate of his uncle, Eugene Thomas, a former UTEP dean. Jay Thomas graduated from Texas Western College, now UTEP, in 1951 with a bachelor’s in mining. The color prints depict Japanese copper mining operations. They are displayed in the conference room of the dean’s suite in the College of Engineering.

The National Institutes of Health has awarded the UTEP College of Health Sciences a $99,000 grant to study metabolically obese but normal weight Hispanic women. The funds supplement a NIH grant. Chantal Vella, assistant professor of kinesiology, will conduct the study on young women who may be predisposed to diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other serious health problems.
